Clearcutting and Chemical Use in Oregon: Myth and Reality

Myth
Reality
Clearcutting is essential for regeneration of commercially desirable tree species. Small patch cutting and selective harvesting are highly effective and widely used techniques for regeneration of all commercial species in Oregon. Selective cutting can be economically profitable and environmentally sound.
Chemical herbicides and pesticides are the only effective techniques for eliminating unwanted vegetation and insect outbreaks. Manual brush control, integrated pest management, and organic, non-toxic weed and pest controls have proven to be equally or more effective than toxic chemical use.
A ban on clearcutting and chemical use will bankrupt Oregon's timber industry. Hundreds of ecologically-minded foresters throughout the state are prospering without the use of clearcutting or the use of toxic chemicals.
Clearcutting and chemical use maximizes the productive potential of Oregon's forestlands. Clearcutting and toxic chemicals cause erosion and damage soil fertility, soil health, and forest productivity. They also poison our water, harming people and wildlife.
Restricting clearcuts and chemical use will cost jobs. Sustainable forestry and organic weed and pest control creates thousands of long-term jobs in the expanding market for ecologically sustainable forest workers.
